Choosing The Right Assisted Living Facility

Making the decision to begin assisted living care for yourself or a loved one can be difficult. Choosing the right assisted living facility can be an even tougher decision. A great way to start the process of researching facilities is to visit the location. While you are at the facility, here are a few things to look for to ensure you are making the right decision.

How Does the Staff Treat the Residents?

The staff at the facility you choose will be the main form of social contact for your loved one. The roles and responsibilities of staff members may vary, but regardless of their title, they should be warm and welcoming to residents. While there may be some interaction with other residents, having to deal with staff who are cold or impatient can severely impact the quality of life. Moving into a personal care facility is a huge change, and your loved one will have to say goodbye to former acquaintances and make new relationships. Psychology Today mentions that this is particularly important for geriatric residents who may feel a sense of depression and hopelessness due to social isolation. Look for staff who build a genuine connection with residents and ask them questions about their life and family.

What Happens in the Facility Day to Day?

Are residents confined to their rooms all day, or are they left with no activities to look forward to? While residents in these facilities often face physical restrictions, there should be a variety of actives available. The National Institute on Aging states that active seniors have a reduced risk of developing certain diseases and can live longer. Gardening, walking, art, games, and reading can all provide residents with mental or physical stimulation to keep them energized. Ask the facility for a calendar of events and look for a variety of activities. You can also ask to see any communal spaces and look for signs of activities such as the availability of books and games in these spaces.

Does the Type of Care Provided Meet my Needs?

People begin assisted living for a variety of reasons. If your loved one is in good health, but simply struggles to keep up with housework, they have very different needs than someone who has severe medical complications. While not all diseases are visible, look at the condition of the other residents to understand the level of care the facility typically provides. Ask the staff about the capabilities of their facility to provide the levels of care your loved one, specifically, needs.

There is nothing easy about this decision, but visiting and understanding the assisted living facility, such as Wellspring Meadows Assisted Living, your loved one will live in can help ease your mind
